The rule that does the work

A lakh crore is a lakh of crores. One lakh is 1,00,000 and one crore is 1,00,00,000, so one lakh crore is 1 followed by 5 zeros and then 7 more: 12 zeros in all. That is exactly one trillion.

Because the two are equal, you never need to convert. A figure in lakh crore is the same figure in trillion. 9.8 lakh crore is 9.8 trillion and 270 lakh crore is 270 trillion.

  • To crore: multiply by 1,00,000. 9.8 lakh crore is 9,80,000 crore.
  • To billion: multiply by 1,000. 9.8 lakh crore is 9,800 billion.
  • To digits: move the decimal point 12 places to the right. 9.8 becomes 9,800,000,000,000, which in Indian grouping is 98,00,00,00,00,000.

Reading a lakh crore figure in the news

Budget speeches, Reserve Bank reports and Indian newspapers often write large rupee amounts in lakh crore. International reports write the same amounts in trillion. Since one lakh crore is one trillion, the number in front stays the same when you switch between the two.

Watch the currency. A headline that says an economy is worth 4 trillion dollars is talking about dollars. To compare it with a rupee figure in lakh crore, first convert dollars to rupees at the exchange rate of that day, then compare. The unit (lakh crore or trillion) and the currency (rupees or dollars) are two separate questions.

Watch the decimals too. 9.08 lakh crore and 9.8 lakh crore look close but differ by 72,000 crore. Read the figure in crore when the gap matters.

Per person: dividing lakh crore by crore

A common question is how much a national figure works out to per person, where the population is also in crore. There is a shortcut: lakh crore divided by crore leaves lakh. So divide the two front numbers and read the answer in lakh rupees.

Example of the arithmetic only: 205 lakh crore divided among 140 crore people is 205 ÷ 140 = 1.4643 lakh, which is ₹1,46,428.57 per person.

Lakh crore in words, and what comes after

In Indian English, 1 lakh crore is written "One Lakh Crore" and 270 lakh crore is "Two Hundred Seventy Lakh Crore". In international English the same amounts are one trillion and two hundred seventy trillion.

Indian English has no common word above crore, so amounts keep growing in lakh crore. 100 lakh crore (10,00,00,00,00,00,000, 14 zeros) is a crore crore, or 100 trillion, but newspapers still write it as 100 lakh crore.
